Prophet (PBUH) said, "Isn't it true that a woman does not pray and does not fast on menstruating? And that is a defect in her religion (Vol. 3, No. 172, see also Vol. 1, No. 301).

The conclusion usually derived is that women can never achieve the same level of faith or spirituality as men because they cannot fulfil their religious duties all the time.

The weakness in this argument and therefore in the Hadith is that it contradicts the undisputed image expressed in the Qur'an of women and men as equal in their duties and expectations as Muslims, servants of God. Women can excel men in Taqwa!

Both men and women Equally the spiritual awareness (Taqwa) to return to God's Mercy and Forgiveness after oppressing their souls through sin.

God determines by deeds and intentions then how can a biological process determine a person's measure of faith? So would God punish women and as it is found in Bukhari; very rarely questioned or reinterpreted and reinforces negative view of women in Islam.

2. Adam and Eve
-------------------

"Were it not for the Children of Israel, meats would not become rotten; and were it not for Eve, woman would not have cheated their husbands."

Al-Bukhari
3330.

Ibn Kathir says, it was Eve who ate first from the Tree and it was her who incited Adam to eat from it. This is what is understood by the above Hadith.

The Judaeo-Christian conception is in Genesis 2:4-3:24

The serpent seduced Eve to eat from it and Eve, seduced Adam to eat with her. When God rebuked Adam, he put all the blame on Eve, "the woman you put here with me ---she gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate it."

God said,

"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband and he will rule over you."

Qur'an says:

Puts blame on both equally! 7:19:23

Nowhere in the Qur'an Eve alone is blamed or she ate before Adam.

Eve in the Qur'an is not temptress, no seducer, or deceiver. Eve is not to be blamed for childbearing pains. God does not punish anyone for another's sin faults.

Both committed a sin and then sought forgiveness and He forgave them both.

3. Eve's Legacy
------------------------

Bible - all women inherit the original sin! Menstruation, pregnancy, and child bearing were punishments given.

Old Testament

"I find more bitter than death the woman is a snare, whose heart is a trap and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner she will ensnare.... (Ecclesiastes 7:26-28)

To the present day; Jewish Orthodox recite "blessed be God King of the Universe that Thou has not made me a woman."

The biblical Eve has played far bigger role in Christianity than Jewish. Her sin has been pivotal.

Eve is responsible for her own sin; her husband; the original sin of all humanity.

In Islam: 33:35, 9:71, 3:195, 40:40,

16:97.

Woman is not devil's gateway, or that she is a deceiver by nature.
|
