37- “Our Lord! Forgive us and those of our brethren who preceded us in faith, and do not put any spite in our hearts towards those who believe, O our Lord! Verily You are the Most-Kind, the Ever Merciful”. Al Hashr 10

“Al-ladhina-amanu” refers to the Muhajirin and Ansar.

At this juncture Allah (SWT) has divided the ummah into 3 groups (1) Muhajirin (2) Ansar (3) Remainder of the Ummah. The qualities and virtues of the first two groups have been mentioned in the Qur'an: Regarding the third group only so much is mentioned that they recognise the truthfulness of Islam of the Sahaba (A.S.) and the fact that we have Iman because of their efforts. Hence we should make du'a for them and also make du'a that no hatred remains in the heart regarding the believers. From this we come to know that the acceptance of those believers that came after the Sahaba (R.A.) and their success lies in having respect and love for the Sahaba (R.A.) and also in making du'a for them. The person in which this (habit) is not found is not worthy of being called a Muslim. It is for this reason that Musab bin Sa'ad (R.A.) said that the ummah comprises of 3 groups. 2 have passed already (Muhajirin and Ansar) now, only one group remains. i.e. Those who have love and show respect to the Sahaba (R.A.). Hence, if you desire a place in the ummah, then include yourself in this third Group.

Qurtubi says that this ayah proves that it is Wajib upon us to have love for the Sahaba (R.A.).

Ibn Abbas (R.A.) states that Allah (SWT) has commanded the believers to seek forgiveness and make du'a for the Sahabah (R.A.) whereas Allah (SWT) in His infinite knowledge knew that the Sahaba (R.A.) will have differences amongst themselves and will be involved in internal warfare. (Therefore it is improper for any Muslim to think bad of any of the Sahabah (R.A.) because of their differences.

Aisha (R.A.) states that she heard Nabi (PBUH) saying “This ummah will not be destroyed until the on coming people will abuse and curse the people of the past". Mariful Qur'an Vol. 8 P. 380/1

Malik bin Ma'mul says that Aamir bin Shurahbil told him, O Malik In one aspect the Jews and Christians are better then the Rawafidh. When the Jews were asked: Who were the most virtuous people in your religion. They would reply: The Companions of Musa (A.S.) and when the Christians are asked the same question. Then they replied the helpers of Isa (A.S.). But when the Rawafidh were asked: Who are the worst people in your religion. They replied the Sahabah (A.S.) (companions) of Nabi (PBUH).
