The Qur’an asks for reflection on nature and the universe to fulfil the desire of the human heart. Allah (swt) (God) either out of love for the Divine or doubt about His existence. Belief in the Devine requires belief in good versus evil in the form of a battle between angels and satanic forces. The Qur’an then teaches the path we choose between these two forces determines your fate in the next life, which is defined by contrast between bliss and torment.

The Divine Ways of Nature

“Are you are not aware that before Allah (swt) prostrate themselves all that are in the heavens and all that are on earth – the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and the animals?...” (22:18). This is an important verse from the Qur’an provides a good basis for the study of the nature in the Qur’an.

The Qur’an warns that in the reflection of nature, humans must not become so awed by what they see and discover that they take to worshiping those things, The Qur’an argues that Allah (swt) created nature and therefore praise and worship should be due to Him alone. This warning applies especially to astrology and the worship of signs, which is very common today (41:47).
↑ top

The Creation

The Qur’an asks its leaders to reflect on two universal patterns of creation:

The Qur’an describes Allah (swt)’s design of the universe as “created in proportion and due measure (54:49).” If you look at any creature, you can see that it’s bodily pattern is completely consistent with it’s ability to survive and function. Perhaps this concept is best reflected in the creation of the human body, which functions as a complimentary unit for the survival and success of the entire human beings.

The entire universe consists of opposite pairs that create a just balance between extremes in creation (51:49). These pairs take the form of dominant and recessive traits, as fond in the human genetic pattern, or in the domination of the sun over the moon, even in society relationships such as parent to child. The Qur’an points out that both members of these pairs prove absolutely necessary for the continued
survival of the earth and proper function of its inhabitants.
↑ top

Creation of the Universe

There has been a lot of debate and discussion within the scientific community about the creation of the universe. One of those theories, the one most excepted by scientists today, is the Big Bang theory the theory states that the universe was all one mass, and a violent, explosion caused the gradual expansion of this mass into galaxies, solar systems, stars and planets.

Scientists commenting on the Qur’an feel that it teaches the Big Bang theory when it says “are then they who are bent on denying the truth not aware that the heavens and the earth were once one single entity, which We then parted asunder?...” (21:30). The Qur’an also describes the universe as “steadily expanding” (51:47).

The last part of verse 21:30 points to another scientific aspect of the universe’s creation, “we made out of water every living thing” (21:30). The role of water in creation is considered a universal scientific truth. Microscope has made it possible to observe that water contributes 50-90% of a living organism’s weight.
↑ top

Stars and Planets

“Further more I swear by the setting of the stars, and that is indeed a mighty appeal if you but knew” (56:75-76). Intestinally, the stars provide a secondary source of light after the sun, and humans use the stars as guides to travel the earth.

So, as you can see, the stars have paid a major role in the development of human progress, especially in areas of navigation and geography. This is why the stars in particular, have been mentioned as being among the sighs of Allah (swt). The Qu’ran talks about planets swimming in their own orbit (34:40), which accurately describes how scientists today believe planets move in space.
↑ top

The Sun and the Moon

The Qur’an almost always mentions the sun and the moon together as a complimentary sign of Allah (swt). The Qur’an gives honour to the sun and moon as one of God’s most majestic signs (91:1-2).

The Qur’an shows and innate knowledge of astronomy in pointing out that the sun and moon alternate by day and night in “rounded course” (21:33), which alludes to the fact that both the sun and moon rotate around the earth, a “scientific” discovery that was made well after the Qur’an’s revelation.

Here on earth, the sun and moon fulfil important functions for mankind. He sun and moon help people keep track of time and the number of months in a year (10:5). As such, the Islamic colander, like the Jewish colander runs on a lunar system.

Also, traditional Muslim cultures still measure the time of prayer by the position of the sun:

First prayer is offered at ay break;

Second prayer offered at noon;

Third prayer is offered when the length of the shadow doubles;

Fourth prayer is offered at sunset;

Fifth prayer is offered about 1 and half hours after sunset.

The sun and moon act as everyday guides from the Divine among Muslims today.
↑ top

Creations on Earth

The Qur’an speaks of Divine ways of the earth, seas, mountain and animal life, and especially in the creation of humans.
↑ top

The Deep Seas

The Qur’an encourages man to study the Ocean and all the blessings that are carried in it as means of becoming thankful to God,

“The two great bodies of water are not alike- the one sweet thirst allaying pleasant to drink, and the other salty and bitter; and yet from either from them of you eat fresh meat, and do you take gems which you may wear and from either you can see ships plough, you might go forth in quest for some of His bounty and thus have cause to be grateful” (35:12).

This verse and other passages (25:53:55:19-20) speak of the dividing barrier between seas. Modern oceanographers have echoed this observation though the scientific discovery that each sea has its own density, temperature and saliently, which do infact “divide the seas”.

The Qur’an also shows knowledge about the depths of the seas, which is describes as “overwhelmed with waves, one over the other, and above it is a cloud of darkness upon darkness, one above the other” (24:40). With the invention of the first nuclear submarine, the wonders of deep-sea waves were discovered. This discovery disproved the theory that water lying under the sea’s surface is calm and tranquil. It showed the sea consists of waves, now known as deep-sea currents, as described in the Qur’an (24:40). The waves also fulfil the divine function of allowing humans to travel by sea. This blessing alone, as the Qur’an points out, is responsible for major developments in human civilisation by helping humans reach out beyond their shores and providing the freedom to trade with other nations.
↑ top

The Sky, Cloud Formations and Thunder

The Qur’an describes cloud formations as the slow coming together of clouds that join together to make heaps of layers that then causes rain to come to earth (24:43).

In another verse, the Qur’an describes the phenomena of winds that plays a major role in raising and spreading clouds over land to ensure that rain and shade spread out over the land (30:48).

The Qur’an speaks of lightening as a sign of Allah (swt) that instils both fear and hope. The Qur’an uses rain as a powerful sign of Allah (swt)’s ability to bring life to that which is dead as a parable for the resurrection of all living things on the Day of Judgment (30:24).
↑ top

Fixed Mountains

The Qur’an describes the divine structure of the mountain as firmly rooted in the earth, “standing firm” so that the mountain does not shake with the rest of the earth (31:10). Today, geologists have also come to the conclusion that mountains are rooted in the earth with hard sediments, like the roots of trees, which play an essential role in securing the earth.

The Qur’an uses the mountain to describe the beautiful nature of the Qur’an and the Day of Judgment; the Qur’an says the mountains crumble by the weight of responsibility that comes with divine Revelation and the day of Questioning (59:21;73:14).
↑ top

Plant Kingdom

Plant life is a manifestation of Allah (swt)’s beauty, according to the Qur’an. The Qur’an describes plant life as bowing in adoration of the Most Merciful (55:6).

The Qur’an also shows a deep understanding for the way plant life is formed and reproduced. The Quran points to the fact that plants are created with a gender, which allows for the reproduction of plant life (31:10). The Qur’an also describes the phenomena of pollination though wind that causes such diversity in plants (15:22).
↑ top

The Olive Plant

Muslim’s enjoy the olive as a fruit of divine blessing. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his companions, “anoint yourselves with olive oil because it comes from a blessed tree”.

Intellectual communities in the Muslim world have also drawn great inspiration from the analogy that the olive tree presents in the Qur’an. One of the oldest and best and most famous Islamic universities, located in Tunisia, is known as Zaytuna (olive tree in Arabic). Following this tradition, Muslims have built Zaytuna Institute in Hayward, California, under the leadership of Sheikh Hamza Yusuf.

The Qur’an has given special attention to the olive tree (24:35;95:1) as a manifestation of the Divine. The olive is one of the unique fruits that can be found in abundance in both the east and west, such is the universal Light of Allah (SWT) according to the Qur’an. Also, the olive is a majestic tree in that it’s roots run so deep into the earth that even in times of drought when other trees die off, the olive tree stays standing. Further more these roots allow for olives to keep growing for hundreds of years, even after the tree looks to have no life in it. All these characteristics of the olive tree are analogies for the Divine.
↑ top

Animal Creation

“There is not an animal (that) lives on earth nor that a creature that flies on its wings, but (forms) communities like you” (6:38). The Qur’an also points to the miracle of how animals have the ability to survive on their own. For example, the cow produces pure milk to feed its young and also humans. The Qur’an also talks about bees in this context:

“And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: Take yourselves in hills, on trees and inhabitations. And eat of all fruit and follow the way of the Lord made easy (for you)” (16:68-69).

This shows that animals too, receive inspiration and messages from the Divine and they submit to His Will in return. Also, this verse continues to say that bees produce “a drink (honey) of varying colours were in as a healing for men.” Most of the Muslim world resorts to honey and Islamic medicine uses honey effectively as a cure for some ailments.
↑ top

Human Beings

The Qur’an often asks us to think about our own origins before claiming independence from the Creator (76:1-2). The Qur’an, in itself described role a reminder to humanity, reminds it’s readers that every single person was created from a single sperm drop that was then divinely sectioned into stages in the womb (22:5).

Most non-Muslims, in the scientific community strongly believe that the origins and stages of embryonic development described in the Qur’an are extremely accurate. The verse 22:5 most thoroughly analysis the process of human development:

“Oh man kind! If you have a doubt about (the truth) of Resurrection, (consider that We created you out of dust, then out of a drop of sperm, then out of a germ cell, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (your origin) clear unto you. And recourse We to rest in the womb for an appointed term. Then do We bring you out as infants so that you reach maturity. And some of you are called to die and some are sent back to the feeblest old age so that they know nothing after having know much…”
↑ top

The Role of Man Kind in Nature

Allah (swt) created and organised the entire universe, and, in turn, each living creature turns to Him in submission. Humans play a special role in this divine creation and organisation – humans inherit the earth as their ….of Allah (swt) on earth (27:62).

From the Qur’an’s perspective, everything in creation serves man’s need for survival and the Qur’an taught us that which is good for example, with the turning of night into day, the human needs are fulfilled in terms of sleep and rest. In the creation of animals, some provide food for the human body and others carry people great distances in search of noble goals, such as knowledge and trade (16:5-8).
↑ top

Showing Kindness to Animals

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once saw a donkey that was bleeding from the nostril and the side of it’s face. Upon witnessing that, the Prophet (PBUH) said, “curses upon the person who has done this” He then ordered this companions to never beat any living creature on its face.

In another teaching the Prophet (PBUH) reported that a camel came running to the Prophet (PBUH) and sat down by his side with tears flowing. The Prophet (PBUH) searched for the camel’s owner and upon finding him asked why the camel was crying. The owner replied that the camel had grown old after many years of service, and now the man wanted to slaughter it and distribute the camels meat. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “do not slaughter it, give it to me with price or no price.” The man then offered the grieving camel to the Prophet (PBUH) as a gift.

Hunting for the sake of sport is strictly prohibited under Islamic law because the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever kills (even a sparrow) for no reason, it will complain to Allah (swt) on the Day of Judgment; this man killed me uselessly and not for the sake of meat.”

In cases when humans must kill an animal for food, the Prophet (PBUH) ordered that it should be done with the sharpest knife possible and without the presence of other animals, so that the least amount of pain could come to animal. So, while Muslims are permitted to eat lawful meat in order to provide strength for life, the sacrifice of animals must take place in the quickest and least painful way.

Human beings are the caretakers of the earth and it’s inhabitants. Therefore abuse of the dominant position that Allah (swt) has given to human beings in strength, intelligence and free will violate that role of caretaker. When humans rebel against this duty by mistreating the earth, the Qur’an says that the creation literally turns against humanity to give a taste of the evil and pain that it sometimes causes (30:41).
↑ top

Angels Versus Satan (the unseen world)

The human heart faces a major test of will and faith; choosing worship of Allah (swt) or rebellion against God’s laws and order. This battle for the spiritual human heart takes place between two Qur’anic characters: Angles and Satan.
↑ top

The Angels are a Pure Creation of Allah (swt)

Muslims believe in Angels, which according to Islamic tradition, have wings and are made out of light, and can also appear in the form of human beings. Angles perform the following functions according to the Qur’an:-

Angels appear by Allah (swt)’s command to inspire and guide devout men and women, foremost among these being the Profits and messengers (for example when the angle visits Mary – (19:17).
Angels appear to execute just punishment against evil and transgression (15:7-8;16:2;25:21-22). Angels warn against worship of anything else other than God (16:2). Angels, act as representatives of the most noble and pure of Allah’s creation, pray to Allah (swt) for the forgiveness of all beings on earth (42:5).
Angles act as agencies of physical and spiritual protection for whomsoever Allah (swt) chooses (82:10-12). Front eh Qur’an’s perspective, people survive the worst accidents or mishaps not by a miracle, but by Divine decree carried out by angles. Furthermore, Allah (swt) sends angels to help people to fight for good against evil.
Angles sit on the right and left of each person to record every single action and word uttered whether it is good or bad. This book of deeds will be presented on the Day of Judgment in front of Allah (swt) (50:17-18).
Angels will blow the trumpet that calls for the Day of Judgment (20:102), take each soul out at each of time of death (6:61), and guard the doors of haven and hell (39:71-75).

The Qur’an’s comments on angels begins that they are pure beings who were told about Prophet Adam being created. The Qur’an quotes the angels as asking, “will you place there in (on earth) one who will make mischief there in and shed blood, while we do celebrate Your praises and glorify Your holy name?” (2:30). Allah (swt) then assigns angels as protectors over human beings to show them that there is indeed another side to the coin, where humans are capable of much good and virtue not only evil and destruction.

The pure power of angels calls for purity in the human soul and seek to protect humans from the Satanic forces that beckon towards transgressing Allah (swt).
↑ top

Satan is an Open Enemy of Mankind

Unlike the Bible, the Qur’an does not describe Satan, called Iblis in Arabic, as a fallen angel. Instead, the Qur’an states that Satan comes from a community known as Jinns, or invisible sprits created from fire that can travel far distances in short times. Jinns can also take human form, just as angels can.

Not all Jinns are devilish in their ways. Some Jinns practise good work and are considered to be Muslims.

The Satanic forces have the following purposes according to the Qur’an:-

Satan causes animosity and hatred amongst people by encouraging them to indulge in actions that tempt the souls to submit to lower passions, such as intoxicants, adultery and gambling (5:91).
Satan seeks to take men out of the remembrance of Allah (swt) and into a state of delusion in which the soul cannot recognise the difference between good and evil, realist and falsehood.
Satan is described as the “deceiver” in the Qur’an (4:120). Satan can indeed make sin look extremely alluring to the eyes, ears, intellect, and hearts of humans (8:48). As such, many people who recognise that they are on a path that leads them towards an unhealthy life find it very difficult to leave the path because of its temporal, deceptive pleasure.
Satan whispers to human heart to turn away from Allah (swt) towards a spiritually downward state. The Qur’an accuses Satan of changing the fair nature of men into a state that apposes the very nature that Allah (swt) instils in humans at the time of birth. The last chapter of the Qur’an contains a prayer, that among other things, seeks protection from Satan’s whispers (114:4).

The Qur’an sees Satan as an important character in the human experience; without this “avowed enemy” (2:168), humans could never be tested in sincerity of faith. It is one thing to say you believe, but do your actions back up your testimony? That is the question presented to human souls, and without an evil path, the test would be void. Also, with out evil, the human experience of good would not be complete. Much of our affection for good comes because it is the opposite of evil.

The Qur’an provides an interesting dialog between Satan and his follows on the Day of Judgment, when Satan disassociates himself with the actions of all those who followed in his footsteps. Satan will say that he had no power over humans other than to call them to the misleading path, and it is their fault for responding to that call (14:22). The Qur’an spells out the choice between the Angels and the Satanic messages when it says, “Satan threatens you with poverty and bids you to be miserly. Allah (swt) promises you His forgiveness and bounties. And Allah (swt) cares for all and He knows all things” (2:268).
↑ top

Accounting for the Soul

Accountability and final reward and punishment in one form or another will come on the Day of Judgment.
↑ top

The Day of Judgment

The Qur’an talks about the Day of Judgment throughout the scriptures and the last part of the Qur’an deals more heavily with this event than other parts do.

The Quran uses the strongest literary devises to draw a picture of the Last Day, when the earth will be folded up and creation will cease to exist. English translations of the Qur’an come close to reproducing the powerful language and feeling that is inspired in the original Arabic text.

“When the sun is folded up, when the stars loose their light, and when the mountains are made to vanish; when the she camel’s big with young, about to give birth, are left untended, and when all beast are gathered together; when seas boil over, and when the souls are sorted out, and when the girl-child that was buried alive is made to ask for what crime she had been slain, and when the scrolls (of men’s deeds) are unfolded; when the heavens is unveiled, and when the blazing fire is kindled to fierce heat, and when paradise is brought near; then each soul know what it has put forward” (81:1-14). The Qur’an says that a trumpet blown by one of the Angels will cause life to cease and the entire earth to literally crumple up, and humanity will run in fear – so much so that the pregnant woman will drop her unborn child. Then a second trumpet will sound and all life that has ever existed will remerge from the earth like scattered moths in a state of confusion and disarray. Thereafter, souls will be separated into three categories:

Those foremost in faith;
Companions of the right hand (righteous souls) and
Companions of the left hand (evil souls)

On the day, Allah (swt) justice will rule, and no excuses or bribes will be of any use. A weight balance will be filled with a soul’s good and bad deeds. If the good deeds outweigh the bad deeds, then that soul experiences paradise. If the bad deeds outweigh the good deeds, then the soul experiences the fire, unless it be by the Mercy of Allah (swt). Sincere faith in Allah (swt) alone is equally, if not more, important in judgement that each soul receives on the Day of Judgment. In fact Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that every action is judged by its intention. So, faith, sincerity of intention, and good actions all go hand-in-hand.

The Qur’an Hadith contain many descriptions of the Day of Judgment, if you want to read more about it then please refer to the following verses and chapters in the Qur’an:-

Chapter 20: 102-127, chapter 23: 101-104, chapter 39: 71-75, chapter 82, chapter 84.
↑ top

Heaven

The Qur’an gives the description of the heaven as follows:- “that which is beyond human perception” (19:61). The Qur’an does but into words a picture of heavenly bliss; the Qur’an’s images of paradise are as beautiful as they are sensational.

“The description of the garden which the righteous are promised: in it are rivers of water which time does not corrupt; rivers of milk wherein the case never alter; rivers of wine delightful to those who drink it; and rivers of honey for all impurity cleansed and the enjoyment of all the fruits and of forgiveness from there sustain us…” (47:15). The Qur’an presents a dialog between the angels and inhabitants of paradise as they enter the gates of heaven. The Angels will say “peace be upon you! Well have you done; enter, this paradise, hereinto abide…” This righteous souls reply to the angels in peace and thank Allah (swt) for His promise that has now come true (39:73-75).
↑ top

The Hell Fire

The Qur’an places equal emphasis both in content and literary language, when describing the hell fire for the souls that reject faith out of arrogance, deny the Hereafter, and sin against themselves.

“Suffering in Hell awaits all who are bent on rejecting their Sustainer; and how vile a journeys end! When they are cast into that (hell), they will hear it’s breath drawing in as it boils up near bursting with fury; every time a group (of sinners) is flung into it, its keeps will ask them, “Has no warner ever come to warn you?” They will reply: “Yes, a warner did indeed come unto us, but we denied you and said never has Allah (swt) sent down anything, you are but lost in a state of delusion!” and they will add, “had we listened to those warnings, or used out own reason, we would not be among those who are destined for the blazing flame!” (67:7-10).

There are some scholars of the Qur’an who believe that the hell fire will not be eternal for all souls. These scholars believe that there may come a time after which souls that had much evil in them, but also some good will be sent paradise after being purified for their sins in the hell fire. Verse 11:107 supports this.
↑ top

Allah (swt)’s Mercy, Wrath

Most important question, if God is the most Merciful, then why does the Qur’an place such a heavy emphasis on God’s wrath towards people who reject Him?

It is important to understand the concept of Mercy and Wrath.

The Qur’an introduces Allah (swt) to the reader of the scripture as the Most Merciful, the most compassionate; each chapter of the Qur’an begins with this declaration. The Qur’an’s version of Allah’s accountability is overwhelmingly merciful. Both the Qur’an in 6:160 and various Hadith make it clear that if a person does something good, then he or she receives reward tenfold or more for that righteous deed. But is a person does something evil, then only the sin of that evil is accounted for.

Furthermore, the Qur’an says that even for the worst sins, such as associating partners with Allah (swt), murder, and adultery, Allah (swt) is still willing to forgive those who return to Him in humility and commit themselves to working righteous deeds (25:68-70). Along the same lines the Hadith say that even if a person has a mountain full of sins, Allah (swt) would forgive, if he or she returns to Allah (swt) asking for His Mercy.

Wrath

The Qur’an says that Allah (swt)’s wrath is for those who are persistent in sin, those who practise oppression and rebel against the cause of justice. Those who transgress all bounds in violating the laws of Allah (swt) shall also receive the Wrath.

The Qur’an sees wrath as something that is literally earned by the hands of those who sin. As such, the Qur’an refers to sinners as “those who oppress their own souls”.
However the Qur’an says that because of Allah (swt)’s Justice, He does not bring wrath on a person, or on people, until they are given the message and are given time to return to Allah (swt).

Islamic tradition does not recognise wrath as one of Allah’s attributes. Rather Muslims see wrath as an important component of Allah’s justice in His attribute as The Just.
↑ top
|
